from 'Tales of Scheherazade'
"In pain I am, dear sister,
For sleep but evades me.
A fair verse thou sing to me,
Then the pain shall let me be."
‘Donyazad’s Lament’ appears in Act II of Paul Kopetz’ bi-lingual opera ‘Tales of Scheherazade’, which was premiered to wide critical acclaim in 2017 in Brisbane, Australia. In this poignant scene, the younger sister Donyazad, who at Scheherazade’s instruction initiates the tactic of cliffhanger storytelling to prevent her sister's execution by Persian king Shahryar, is brought to her sister's bedchamber so that she can say farewell before Scheherazade's execution the next morning. Unbeknownst to the king, this pretend ‘farewell’ has been well-planned by the clever sisters and eventually leads to a very happy ending for all.
In this arrangement by the composer, Donyazad’s heart-wrenching farewell is lyrically delivered by the flute. A beautiful melody that can be accessed by flautists of all levels.
